How It Was Built
Hal Griffith spent close to thirty years picturing a Ferris wheel on the Seattle waterfront. What finally made it possible was realizing he already owned the place to put one the end of his own pier, where the deck runs out and Elliott Bay begins.Permits went in during November 2010. Parts arrived from Europe and across the US, 550 tons of concrete went down at the pier’s end, and the wheel went up in under a year. When it opened in the summer of 2012 it reached some 40 feet past the end of the pier with nothing underneath but salt water, and it was the tallest Ferris wheel on the US West Coast at the time.
